About Me

MeHello and thanks for dropping by, it’s nice to see you :) I presume, because you clicked on the about me link, that you might be interested in knowing a little more about me. Well here’s the Cliff Notes version (or the Coles Notes version if you’re in Canada) about myself.

I am a 52 year old single (16 years and loving it) male who lives in the great city of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. I have been “practicing” simple living ever since I “retired” at the age of 32 (read my story). Although for the longest time, I did not know that I was living a simple lifestyle, I was just living how I wanted to, on my own terms and for me. I later found out, through the last few minutes of a PBS television show, that my choice of lifestyle was categorized under the Voluntary Simplicity umbrella, which now includes minimalist lifestyle, Simple Life design and other relative buzz words. And while I enjoy living a simple life, I am far from a minimalist as you can get, although I do like the idea at times and enjoy the many blogs dedicated to that particular lifestyle.

Being a simple lifestyle enthusiast, I try and practice what I preach. Here’s a short list of who I am:

  • a very proud father-figure/mentor (over 14 years) to a now 25 year old young man
  • a brother
  • a friend to many
  • a bachelor (happily so)
  • a self-employed Montreal guitar teacher to wonderful kids big and small
  • a (sometimes) working musician
  • a web-designer
  • a computer-fixer
  • an arm-chair sociologist (I have a BA and an MA in that particular discipline)
  • a jazz guitar lover (I created a very popular jazz guitar online magazine on the subject)
  • an internet lover and (now) simple living blogger
  • content (as in happy, satisfied, fulfilled…yada, yada, yada…you get the picture)

Here’s a shorter list of what I am not:

  • wealthy (I make less than $15,000.00 a year)
  • stressed
  • worried
  • consumed with buying things
  • a workaholic (far, far from it)
  • bored
  • without
  • needy
  • lonely
  • isolated
  • weary
  • medicated
  • thin (working on that)
  • deprived

Ok…so that was a longer list than I anticipated and I could continue, but I think you get the idea. Simple living allows me the freedom to be me, regardless of what others think or expect of me, and I am so grateful that I can live my life the way I want to. If you’re thinking about moving in that direction, I would highly recommend it!!

Well, there ya have it, me in a nutshell. If you have any questions and/or comments, please don’t be shy, I love hearing from anyone who cares to say “hello” :) Peace out!

Nice to meet you, Lyle! I am happy to see you are on this journey. I am not a de-clutterer by nature – I tend to gather – but I do like the simplicity of everyday things. I think one can have ‘stuff’ but still enjoy ‘simplicity’ don’t you?

For instance, I love rocks and seashells and pine cones and leaves and the moon. Can I collect those things (well, except for the moon), scatter then around my house, and still be living a simple life? Does my clutter consisting of shells and rocks and leaves and twigs make me have to surrender my “simple life” badge? I think not. And you express it perfectly here.

I think “simple” is in how you live your life – how you feel – and not in how many or how few possessions you own. Of course, I could never “own” those rocks and such – they belong to the earth. Oh, aren’t I clever?

Thanks so much for giving us this little piece of insight into your life. I look forward to more!

Thanks again Patti, and you are indeed clever :)

“I think “simple” is in how you live your life – how you feel – and not in how many or how few possessions you own.” – You hit the proverbial nail on the head Patti…for me that’s exactly what a simple life is! Thank you for that :)

I am totally with you cousin, as long as your happy it;s all that counts!! Money is the root of all evil and everyone I know here, that’s all they seem to care about. Money helps in situations, such as food , shelter. I do not need a escalade of convertable turbo powered anything. Plus try putting gas in these gas guzzzlers!!! I’m happy, yes being single is a great thing. I totally enjoy not having to put up with another idiot again. I’m loving life now! And it sounds like your doing what makes you happy!!! Hope to see ya soon, I guess Deb never got around to see ya when she went down :(

    • Lyle says:

Hey Cindy and thanks so much for stopping by :) Good to read that you are happy being single and loving life! So many people I know just can’t seem to enjoy themselves when they are single…and like you, I love it!

And no, I didn’t get a chance to see Debbie, but hopefully next time. It would be great to see you if you find yourself down my way. Take care and don’t be a stranger :)

Nice to meet you Lyle. I am enjoying your blog and am a little jealous of your lifestyle. I’ve been wanting to surrender myself to simplicity for the longest time but just don’t know where to begin. Maybe a post on that would be somethign you would like to share? Thanks again and keep up the good, but simple, work.

    Lorraine

    • Lyle says:

Hi Lorraine and thanks for dropping by. No need to be jealous, there’s plenty simple lifestyles to go around :) And speaking of which, thank you for the blog post idea…I’m gonna do it! Take care and I hope you too find your simple in this life. All the best.

  4. Hi Lyle
I love your mindset and chilled out attitude to life. Not many people are that content with a minimal income and lifestyle. I admire that. I am quite stressed about money having embarked on a life as a freelance writer. Still new to it and therefore money is in short supply. So I love your approach to life and money.
You’re doing what you love and are actually so much richer for it than those out there in the rat race chasing financial success and material goods!
    Good for you!

    • Lyle says:

      Hey Deevra :)

Thanks so much for the kind words, I couldn’t have said it better myself :)

Take care and all the best.

Lyle, I am a sucker for About Me pages and this is one of the best I’ve ever seen!!! I am particularly fond of your What I Am Not list. Delightful. I too am very happy and am (now) living rather simply. I haven’t looked back once (unless I’m making fun of my former self) and plan on keeping it like this or even better. So glad to “meet” you!

    • Lyle says:

Thanks so much for your kind words Tammy and I’m glad to “meet” you as well!! I’m so glad that there are people who “get it” :)

Take care and all the best.

    Hi!
Felt the need to comment and say “hi”- I am married to a jazz musician who sounds very similar to you- living simply before he even knew what it was.
It is a different life, but awesome. Your blog is very inspiring- and I always get excited to see like-minded people who are “making it” (how often have I hear, “when is your husband going to get a real job?” BlaH! )
Look forward to reading your blog.

    Katie

    • Lyle says:

Hi Katie and thank you so much for dropping by :)

Kudos to your husband for sticking with his life…I know only too well that it can sometimes be difficult…but it is sooooo worth it at the end of the day.

Also kudos to you for realizing that this lifestyle IS awesome!! :)

Next time someone asks you when your husband is going to land a “real job”, answer back with “when are you going to get a real life!” Although for the sake of civility, you might want to use your inside voice :)

Take care and my best to you both and tell your husband to keep on swingin’ :)
