Frugal Food Friday – Campbell’s Chunky Soup And Rice
Hey everyone. I hope your week was great and that your weekend will be even greater
I’m just about to enjoy an evening out seeing some great Jazz with my cousin, but before I go, a quick Frugal Food Friday beckons…so here we go…
Last week I was battling a slight cold and hadn’t gone out to do any grocery shopping…nor did I feel like cooking anything.
As I looked in my cupboards – which would have given Mother Hubbard a run for her money – I saw that I had a can of Campbell’s Chunky Sirloin Burger soup. Feeling like something a tad more substantial, I looked around and also noticed that I had some Basmati rice. Then I got an idea…why not make the rice and the soup and add them both together for a truly hearty concoction…which is what I did!
I cooked the rice and soup separately – per instructions – and then combined them both together to make a rather delicious meal that kept me full until morning.
The total cost of both the soup and rice was about two dollars and change. But since I had both, that night anyway, dinner was – relatively – free And yes, I know, I had paid for them both at one point so not entirely free!
The take way here is to use what you have at your disposal and to look at your food items in a new light. You never know just how tasty an “odd” paring can be.
I may not do this all the time, but it is nice to know that when I am not feeling well, or if I am just too lazy to do an all out cook-out, that a simple can of soup and some rice can keep me happy and nourished when I need it. And of course, you can use any soup you want, Campbell’s or your own home made.
So…what other “different” food concoctions have you found yourself coming up with at the last minute?
Take care everyone and have a great weekend.
As usual, I’d love to read your thoughts on this topic so please, keep the conversation flowing by adding a comment below.

Hi Lyle! I would never have thought to put soup and rice together like that. What a great idea for a more fulfilling meal! My most creative concoctions haven’t been all that creative to be honest. Banana sandwiches? I’ll have to start looking at my basic food stocks in a different light.
Hey Hayley and thanks for dropping by
I think you’ll like the soup/rice mix and while I have never had a banana sandwich, I’ve heard from others who have…and it’s been a positive experience!
If you come up with some other delicious concoctions, lemme know.
Take care and my best to all.

Appreciated you sharing your frugal food idea. Cambells still rocks after all those years.
Another idea for a very UBER CHEAP source of protein is simply dried red lentils.
You can buy them in bulk or bags pretty much anywhere rice is sold.
They don’t take long to cook in boiling water. Simply add one small boullion cube and some salt and pepper and BAM you’ve got an instant hearty protein rich meal
Bon appetito!
Thanks for this very frugal tip Lyle. I tried it and it was very satisfying and filling. Even my son liked it, which is a big thing in my household
Thanks again.
