Let The Spring Cleaning-Decluttering Begin

ID-10011913Hey everyone. I hope you are all having a great week so far :)

Well thankfully, I think I can safely say that spring is finally here to stay…at least until summer!

So, in celebration of slightly cool breezes and warmer air, I am embarking on a spring cleaning and decluttering campaign in my small apartment – which is about three years overdue!

When I first moved into my new digs four years ago this coming July, I had gotten rid of a lot of crap from my previous place which I had lived in for twenty years. As you can well imagine, there was stuff piled up all over the place and thanks to the move, I was able to sell a bunch of stuff via yard sales, as well as, give a lot of stuff away to the local Goodwill style stores. The rest went out onto the curb for passer-by pick-up :)

Well, now it’s roughly four years later and I find that while I have been a good boy at keeping things neat and tidy, I’m beginning to see a little more clutter than I would like. It’s time to do something about it, and spring time is the perfect time!

Over the next little while – and if you all don’t mind – I am going to be focusing on various parts of my apartment and will blog about my methods for cleaning things up.

To be honest, I’ve never really found decluttering to be within the scope of simple living. I do realize that there are many wonderful blogs out there that tie simplicity, minimalism and decluttering together, but in my own head, living a simple life is so much more than having a sparse living arrangement with stark white furniture and lots of space. For me, simplicity is all about the person and how in control they are of their own lives vis-a-vis outside influences. If anything – once again, at least to me – the clutter-free movement is a very small part of that element of reclaiming personal control and is not the be all, end all of simple living. Which is why I was very disappointed when I bought my first issue of Real Simple magazine. I might as well have bought a Martha Stewart magazine as I didn’t see much difference. But hey, that’s just me, and I am in no way denigrating the clutter-free movement. In fact, I’ve met some really great people online who reside in that world and who I respect and like a heck of a lot :)

So maybe I’m wrong! Maybe decluttering IS the way to a simpler life. Well, I’m gonna find out!

Will you be embarking on a spring cleaning/decluttering campaign in your home or life?

I’d love to read your thoughts on this topic, so if you have any tips, tricks, recommendations and/or suggestions, please feel free to share in the comments section below.
