Living Simply And Being Happy

smiley faceOne of the “side affects” of living or attempting to live a simple life is a much greater sense of happiness, satisfaction and contentment. At least this has been my experience!

However, if you don’t believe me, then maybe you’d believe a group of more learned types like a bunch of psychologists and researchers who have studied what makes us happy?

In an article titled 10 Things Science Says Will Make You Happy, YES! Magazine reports that, “The emerging field of positive psychology is bursting with new findings that suggest your actions can have a significant effect on your happiness and satisfaction with life.

So what are these ten types of action? Well they are as follows:

  1. Savor Everyday Moments
  2. Avoid Comparisons
  3. Put Money Low on the List
  4. Have Meaningful Goals
  5. Take Initiative at Work
  6. Make Friends, Treasure Family
  7. Smile Even When You Don’t Feel Like It
  8. Say Thank You Like You Mean It
  9. Get Out and Exercise
  10. Give It Away, Give It Away Now!

Well what do you know!! These ten happiness factors figure prominently in my simple living lifestyle, with the exception of number 9, which I try to do more of now than before, and number 5, given that I’m self-employed.

It’s funny. Unless somebody puts things like this into a list, I don’t attempt to quantify how my life is lived. It’s just HOW I’ve been living my life for the past 20 some years, and when I see studies like this I can’t help but think “Duh!! I could have told you that!” :)

Mind you, if you’re just starting out on the path to a simpler life, these articles can be the push you need to get her done!

That being said, don’t try and do everything all at once. If you’re following a blog challenge or trying to live your life via a list like the one above, take it slow. Baby steps all the way, until one day, you won’t need to think about what it is that you’re trying to do, you will already be there doing it! That will then be the life changer you were looking for!

    Put Money Low on the List- Money will always be on the list however. Nature of the beast!.
    Have Meaningful Goals- Hummm….I be failing at that sadly!. Gotta’ work on that!.
    Take Initiative at Work- Not working currently but will have to soon….
