The Magic Garbage Room

Hey everyone, I hope your week is going well.

A while back I wrote a post about how some people seem to have no problem tossing out items – both big and small – that still work nicely and could be given to a new home with little to no hassle. Unfortunately, it is easier to just toss unwanted goods in the trash than it is to post an ad on Craigslist or drive to the nearest Goodwill or local thrift store.

Mind you, I cannot complain too much since I have greatly benefited by those who go with the convenient toss. This is where the Magic Garbage Room comes into play. Over the almost four years that I have lived in this 403 unit apartment building, I have come across, and “rescued” some great tossed out items. Here’s what I have found and kept:

  • Brand new two wheel upright dolly like the pro-movers use
  • Corner fitting display unit
  • VCR/DVD combo player
  • DVD player/recorder combo
  • 27 inch Dynex flat screen TV which works with the remote from my 32 inch Dynex which I purchased new a few years ago
  • Cute balcony chair
  • Chaise lounge which I also use on the balcony
  • A bunch of used toys which made great gifts for the little ones in my life
  • Assorted shirts, pants and really nice socks…which I washed before wearing
  • Two pairs of sneakers
  • A brand new pair of heavy duty winter boots
  • Brand new Ikea Dish rack
  • HP Wireless all in one printer with photo copier/fax/scanner features
  • And my most recent find, a brand new 4 slice Hamilton beach toaster with all the do-dads
  • And if that’s not enough, my ex-girlfriend has also found some great items that she rescued as well including cute blouses and sweaters along with unopened cosmetics!

Suffice it to say, I’ve done well! In fact, there have been perfectly good items that I have left behind because I just didn’t need them or didn’t have the space in my apartment. And this is just from the garbage room on my floor. There are twelve more floors to look through if I were so inclined, especially during the moving month of July or when the local university students head home for the summer months!!

Now, you may be wondering…why do I call the garbage room a Magic Garbage Room?  Well, I’ll tell ya!

I do so, because there have been more than a few occasions where I have truly needed something but didn’t have the money to buy that particular item, yet magically such items have appeared!!

For example, last winter I was in need of some good winter boots but didn’t have the money they were going to cost me new. I scoured the thrift stores in my area but no luck. Then one evening as I was taking out the trash I found the perfect pair of winter boots that looked like they had never been worn, just waiting for me in the Magic Garbage Room…and I’ve been wearing them since!

There was also a time when my old printer died and I needed to get a new one. As you might well imagine, I was not looking forward to spending the money but it was something that I truly needed. Well, wouldn’t ya know, a day later as I opened the garbage room door, there was a slightly used HP printer as described above…with a full set of ink cartridges!! Why someone wanted to throw this in the trash I have no idea, but I was more than happy to give it a good home…which I did!!

Then around Christmas time, I was thinking about getting some decorations for my apartment to make it look festive. A couple of days later, my ex-gf comes in with a huge bag of Christmas lights and decorations which she had just found in the Magic Garbage Room! Perfect timing!

And just this week I was thinking of getting a new toaster because my old one was on the fritz. Well, magically, two days later, I opened the garbage room door to see an almost spanking new Hamilton-Beach four slice bagel style toaster. I said a silent “thank you” to no one in particular and brought that puppy home where I’ve been eating delicious toasted English muffins ever since!

So that’s why I call it the Magic Garbage Room. I believe in the universe smiling down on us when we need it the most and whether you want to call it the Law of Attraction or just plain old luck, I believe that if we really are in need of something…or someone…some unseen power/force sends it our way. One just has to be open to such things to accept them in whatever way they arrive…such as in a garbage room. Unfortunately, I have yet to find a suitcase full of money…but I’m sure if I keep thinking about it, it will appear in the Magic Garbage Room one day :)

I realize that some might find picking items out of the trash a “no-no” for a variety of reasons. That being said, there’s nothing shameful in giving a used and discarded item a second chance. You don’t have to tell anyone where you got the item from and if it can be a benefit to you or your family, then why not!?

So…do you rescue perfectly good items from the trash? And if so, what have you found to be useful?  Lois, I already know your answer so no need to respond to this particular question :)

Do you believe in the Law of Attraction or in a higher power that is there for us when needed?

I’d love to read what your thoughts are on this subject, so please continue the conversation in the comments section below.

Take care everyone and all the best.
